“Hi my name is Martha and I have called Alice Springs home for 8 years. I live here with my husband and five kids.
I came to Australia as a refugee from South Sudan formally known as Sudan. I lived in Dadab refugee camp in Kenya and came to Australia for a better life with the support of UNHCR. I was resettled in Melbourne then I came to Alice Springs for more work opportunities.
What I like about Alice are the opportunities, and proximity to everything , which is great for a work life balance. It is easier to drop the kids to their activities and get home quickly.
Alice Springs is a great place to grow professionally in your industry of choice. The environment and weather in Alice have also contributed to me staying here. It reminds me of the Kenyan desert that I lived in for most of my childhood.
My advice to next generation of refugees is to stay strong. It can be hard coming to a new country, where there is a new language and everything is different. Regardless of how hard it will get, stay strong and respect the laws and navigate the opportunities available to you,
It doesn’t mean all is okay once you arrive and settle but remember that there is help when you need it.”
