Details of Event / Festival

June 12 is the date in 1898 on which Emilio Aguinaldo issued the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain.  It is also called Day of Freedom / Araw ng Kalayaan, and is an annual national holiday in the Philippines.

All government offices are closed on this day, and generally people spend the day with family and with friends and relatives enjoying outdoor and indoor activities. There is a flag raising at the Aguinaldo Shrine and reading of the Philippine Declaration of Independence.  In Manila fireworks are common, and you will see many flags flying across the country at homes and businesses.

In Alice Springs, the Mabuhay Multicultural Association organise a cultural celebration for Philippines Independence Day event with food, music and dance.
