On 14 and 15 August 2026, India and Pakistan celebrated their 80th Independence Days. In Alice Springs, the Indian and Pakistani communities came together to mark this important occasion through community celebrations and the annual Independence Day Cricket Match.
The Independence Day Cricket Match first started in Alice Springs in 2015, with a rotating shield contested between the Indian and Pakistani communities. After a long break, this community tradition was successfully restarted in 2024 and has once again become an important event bringing both communities together.
This year, Pakistan entered the match as the defending champions, while the Indian team came with a strong determination to win the shield back.
The match started at 1:00 pm on Saturday, 15 August, with a great turnout of spectators and families from both communities. There was plenty of excitement and support from both sides. However, Mother Nature had different plans. Heavy rain interrupted the match after only eight overs, and the game had to be postponed until the following day.
The match resumed on Sunday, 16 August. India put together a strong batting performance, finishing their 20 overs at 4/181, setting Pakistan a target of 182 runs.
Pakistan came out determined and gave a good fight. However, against a strong Indian bowling attack, Pakistan was eventually bowled out for 135 runs. India secured the victory and was announced as the 2026 Independence Day Cricket Shield winner, bringing the shield back to the Indian side.
More importantly, the event was about much more than cricket. After the match, players, families and community members from both sides shared food, spent time together and celebrated in a friendly and harmonious environment. The event showed how sport can bring different communities together and strengthen friendship, respect and multicultural harmony in Alice Springs.
Both the Indian and Pakistani communities greatly appreciated the support provided by MCSCA in making the event possible. The communities also thanked No More, Alice Springs Town Council, Alice Tigers Cricket Club, Alice Springs Cricket Association and Woolworths for supporting the event.
The 2026 Independence Day Cricket Match was a wonderful example of the spirit of “Everyone Belongs”—two communities celebrating their heritage while coming together as one Alice Springs community.
